Here's what science tells us about optimal interview preparation:
The most effective practice isn't endless repetition—it's "retrieval practice" combined with honest self-evaluation. When practicing interview responses:
✅ Record yourself answering questions and watch it back (studies show this improves self-awareness by up to 33%)
✅ Use the "STAR" method, but with a twist: After each practice answer, wait 10 minutes, then try to recall and write down what you said. This strengthens memory formation and helps identify gaps.
✅ Practice in different environments. Research shows varying your practice location improves performance under pressure by reducing context-dependent memory.
✅ Schedule mock interviews for the same time of day as your actual interview. Your cognitive performance fluctuates throughout the day, so matching practice conditions matters.
The "testing effect" shows that active recall beats passive review. Instead of memorising answers, focus on understanding your core stories and adapting them naturally.
Are you landing interviews right now? If not, you probably need a new resume.
